Virgin’s Bower
Clematis virginiana
Virgin’s bower is a vigorous, deciduous vine with fragrant white flowers that appear from late summer into fall. Its vigorous growth requires attention and pruning to keep it off other plants and to maintain an attractive appearance. It will tolerate a wide range of sun exposure but performs best with morning sun and afternoon shade to limit disease issues. Female plants can become weedy with self-seeding. Prune in late winter/early spring to maintain a full, bushy appearance. Easily confused with invasive Clematis terniflora and you must ensure you are planting the correct species.
Heads up: Clematis virginiana can spread quickly, so keep an eye on it, and trim to prevent overgrowth. It is also mildly toxic if ingested, so keep pets and kids away.
Check the scientific name! Be sure not to buy the invasive Clematis terniflora which is sold at some nurseries despite the harm it does to local habitats.
