Shortleaf Pine

Pinus echinata

Shortleaf pine is a native evergreen tree that provides shade and cover for wildlife. It is a good choice for naturalizing large properties, and is one of the finest trees for gardening under because of its high shade and deep roots. Shortleaf pine forests of the region were unusually rich in all-year-round wildflowers. Shortleaf pines are among the straightest and most stately of our native pines, and their straight lumber is highly sought after.
