Carolina Jessamine

Gelsemium sempervirens

Carolina jessamine is one of the best vines you can grow in the southeast with beautiful blooms and fine textured, glossy evergreen leaves. Its bright yellow, fragrant flowers show up sometimes in February as one of our earliest native flowers. Blooms usually peak in late March in our region. An excellent choice for screening and shade when grown on a variety of structures. Carolina jessamine is tolerant of a wide range of soils and sun exposure but performs best in full sun and good garden soil. Prune in the first and second year after planting to keep it from getting top heavy and shading lower branches.

Heads-up: Carolina jessamine is toxic if ingested, so it’s best to keep it away from pets and small children.
